Self-empowerment is critical to overcoming the existential crisis posed by climate change. Each
of us has to achieve the confidence – the personal power — that comes from feeling self-worth
and inner beauty. Feeling inner strength positions each of us to promote and be part of the social
and political changes critical to saving our planet from human-driven destruction.
So, the two go hand in hand: The accumulation of personal power with its strong sense of
confidence, courage and wisdom as one also acts in the collective realm. One of the great truths
of human existence is that we as persons are only fully realized in community.

In my work as an international health advocate, I have many times witnessed firsthand the
pernicious effects of climate change. In Malawi, for instance, I conversed with female farmers
carrying the emotional burden of no longer being able to adequately feed their children because
rainfall had become unreliable. Silently, I cried to see their malnourished and stunted children
and to feel the emotional agony of these loving mothers who wanted so much more for their
children.
It may be easy to ignore the plight of people like these mothers who live so far away. But now
that climate disaster has come so visibly to the United States, the call for change is booming out
loud and clear. We have to act collectively via political action to save humanity. But, this can
only be done effectively if each of us achieves greater self-empowerment. Acquiring Personal
Power is Healthy and Wise.
A critical initial step in personal empowerment is to stop both feeling sorry for ourselves and
blaming others for this horrific fate global warming has thrust upon us. Why waste energy on
self-pity and blame? Our imperative is to transform such negative energies into positive action,
and this needs to be done both individually and on a mass scale. In my case, it took me a long
time to realize that I had to stop blaming “greedy” corporations and the politicians they buy and
to become engaged in more constructive ways.
Each of us has to act by voting for and supporting political figures at all levels who prioritize a
green revolution now, by donating to environmental causes, by engaging in the civic life of our
communities to promote environmental protections and justice, by being informed of the issues
and solutions, by promoting the common good, and so much more.
